UCLA Depression Grand Challenge Director Nelson Freimer, MD, was interviewed for a recent GQ article exploring whether mood-tracking wearables can support mental health.
The article also describes the UCLA-Apple Digital Mental Health Study, which seeks to illuminate the relationship between objective, everyday measures (e.g., sleep, heart rate, time in daylight) and symptoms of depression and anxiety.
“Despite decades of research, there’s still so much we don’t know about depression,” Freimer told GQ. “Unlike other medical conditions, we don’t have objective tools like X-rays or MRIs to detect depression or see how it manifests differently from person to person.”
