Talking about the Depression Grand Challenge and campus mental health resources at Bruin Family Weekend

The Depression Grand Challenge, in partnership with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), hosted parent and family workshops on October 26 and 27, 2018 during Bruin Family Weekend. Representatives from the DGC and CAPS spoke to full crowds both days, and provided an overview of campus resources available to support all Bruins’ emotional well-being during their time at UCLA.

DGC members offered an overview of the Screening and Treatment for Anxiety and Depression (STAND) Program. The DGC’s program allows students to assess whether they are experiencing symptoms of depression and/or anxiety and offers immediate treatment options best fit for their needs. The program is available to all registered UCLA students, at all times, on all devices.

The sessions closed with brief Q&A sessions in which parents asked questions about the basic science of depression and anxiety, and how they may take on more active roles in guiding students towards resources available on campus.

Participants from the Depression Grand Challenge included:
  • Michelle Craske (Executive Committee, UCLA Depression Grand Challenge)
  • Eliza Congdon (Project Director, UCLA Depression Grand Challenge Human Studies)
  • Ariel Seroussi (Medical Director of Psychiatric Emergency Services, Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital; Attending Psychiatrist; STAND Program)

Participants from Counseling and Psychological Services included:
  • Gabriel Loredo (Community and Outreach Coordinator, Counseling and Psychological Services)
  • Saeromi Kim (Assistant Clinical Director, Counseling and Psychological Services)
