During Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference this week, Apple cited UCLA Depression Grand Challenge mental health research findings and expertise in demonstrating the importance of caring for your mental health. The company also announced groundbreaking new mental health features for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch users.
According to the release from Apple, “The Health app for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, and the Mindfulness app in watchOS 10, bring an engaging and intuitive way for users to reflect on their state of mind.”
The statement explained the powerful insights available through the new features and shared supporting findings from the UCLA Digital Mental Health Study, conducted through the university’s Depression Grand Challenge. Initial results showed more than 80 percent of survey participants found reflecting on their mood in the study app increased emotional awareness, and about half said it increased wellbeing.
Michelle Craske, UCLA distinguished professor of psychology and psychiatry who also created and oversees the Depression Grand Challenge STAND program, said that research shows that reflecting on one’s own mental state can help build emotional awareness and resilience.
“Identifying our feelings has been shown to help us manage difficult emotions, appreciate positive moments, and improve wellbeing,” said Craske.
