Alex Bui, PhD, a data science expert, leverages his unique experience and expertise to advance the UCLA Depression Grand Challenge’s large-scale data collection and data analysis efforts, such as those underpinning the groundbreaking Digital Mental Health Study.
Bui’s research includes informatics and data science for biomedical research and healthcare in areas related to distributed information architectures and mobile health; methodological development, application, and evaluation of artificial intelligence (AI) methods, including machine/reinforcement learning; and data visualization. His work bridges contemporary computational approaches with the opportunities arising from the breadth of biomedical observations and the electronic health record, tackling the associated translational challenges.
In addition to Bui’s involvement in the DGC, he holds several key leadership roles across UCLA that reflect the breadth of his expertise. He directs the UCLA Medical & Imaging Informatics group and UCLA’s Bridge2AI Coordination Center, an NIH-funded initiative focused on advancing the use of AI and machine learning in biomedical research. He is also co-director of the UCLA Center for AI & SMART Health and as senior associate director at the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute, with a focus on informatics.
Academically, Bui is a professor for the departments of radiological sciences, bioengineering and bioinformatics; David Geffen Chair in Informatics; and director of the Medical Informatics Home Area within UCLA Graduate Program in Bioscience — anchoring his work in a broader mission to educate the next generation of scientists in ever-changing technologies and sciences, a mission shared by the DGC.
